2025 Gulangyu Amateur Piano Competition (General Rules)

  The 2025 Gulangyu Amateur Piano Competition will be held at Gulangyu, Xiamen, China, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The competition is organized by the Administrative Committee of Xiamen Gulangyu-Wanshishan Scenic Area and hosted by the Gulangyu Amateur Piano Competition Organizing Committee. The jury will be composed of musicians from professional conservatories in China.

  I. Categories

  The competition is divided into four categories: Senior, Junior A, Junior B, and Children, consisting of video preliminary round, semifinals and finals.

  Semifinalists: 20 contestants for each category

  Finalists: 10 contestants for each category

  II. Eligibility (open to all nationalities)

  Open to contestants of any nationality and profession. The competition is intended for children and senior not enrolled in piano majors at domestic or international music institutions at the time of registration, as well as non-professional piano enthusiasts.

  Senior Category: Ages 17-32 (1993.5.20-2009.5.19).

  Junior A Category: Ages 14-16 (2009.5.20-2012.5.19).

  Junior B Category: Ages 11-13 (2012.5.20 -2015.5.19).

  Children Category: Ages 8-10 (2015.5.20 -2018.5.19).

  III. Repertoire Requirements

  1.Senior Category

  a)Video Preliminary Round (within 12 minutes): Two contrasting works will be chosen by the contestant. These works may be used in the semifinals or finals.

  b)Semifinals (within 12 minutes).: Two contrasting works will be chosen by the contestant. 

  c) Finals (within 15 minutes): Two contrasting works will be chosen by the contestant. All works must be different from the semifinals.

  2.Junior A Category

  a)Video Preliminary Round (within 6 minutes): One work will be chosen by the contestant. This work may be used in the semifinals or finals.

  b)Semifinals (within 6 minutes): One work will be chosen by the contestant.

  c)Finals (within 12 minutes): Two contrasting works will be chosen by the contestant. All works must be different from the semifinals.

  3.Junior B Category

  a)Video Preliminary Round (within 6 minutes): One work will be chosen by the contestant. This work may be used in the semifinals or finals.

  b)Semifinals (within 6 minutes): One work will be chosen by the contestant.

  c) Finals (within 12 minutes): Two works will be chosen by the contestant. All works must be different from the semifinals.

  4.Children Category

  a)Video Preliminary Round (within 5 minutes): One work will be chosen by the contestant. This work may be used in the semifinals or finals).

  b)Semifinals (within 5 minutes): One work will be chosen by the contestant.

  c)Finals (within 10 minutes): Two works will be chosen by the contestant. All works must be different from the semifinals.

  IV. Competition Schedule

  1. Important Dates

  May 20, 2025: Registration deadline

  June 21, 2025: Announcement of video preliminary results

  August 1, 2025: Check-in and drawing of lots at the designated venue

  Morning of August 2, 2025: Children’s category semifinals

  Afternoon of August 2, 2025: Junior A category semifinals

  Morning of August 3, 2025: Junior B category semifinals

  Afternoon of August 3, 2025: Senior category semifinals

  Morning of August 4, 2025: Children’s category and Junior A category finals

  Afternoon of August 4, 2025: Junior B category and Senior category finals

  6:30 p.m., August 4, 2025: Award ceremony

  2.Schedule and Procedures

  a)The competition organizing committee will arrange for experts to conduct an initial review of the application materials to determine the eligibility of applicants. Results of the preliminary round will be communicated to applicants by phone or email by June 21, 2025, and will also be published online on the Xiamen Gulangyu Government Affairs website: http://gly.xm.gov.cn and the official website of the Xiamen Gulangyu Cultural Tourism Development Center: http://www.glyylq.cn/.

  b)Contestants advancing to the semifinals must arrive in Xiamen, China, and report to the designated location by the afternoon of August 2, 2025.

  c)The performance order will be determined by a draw, and this order will be maintained throughout the competition. Contestants in the Children’s, Junior A, and Junior B categories are expected to check in and draw lots on the afternoon of August 1, while contestants in the Senior category are scheduled to check in and draw lots on the afternoon of August 2. Contestants must arrive at the venue at the designated time; failure to do so will be considered a withdrawal from the competition.

  d)All performances must be played from memory. Contestants may decide the order of their repertoire and the use of repeats.

  e)If contestants wish to modify their repertoire, they must notify the competition organizing committee by July 11, 2025. No changes to the repertoire are allowed during the competition period.

  f)On the day of their performance, contestants are required to provide two photocopies of their repertoire for that round.

  V. Awards and Prize Amounts

  1.Senior Category

  Gold Prize: CNY 4,000

  Silver Prize: CNY 3,000

  Bronze Prize: CNY 2,000

  Finalist Prize: 3 winners,  CNY 1,000 each

  Honorable Mention: 4 winners, CNY 600 each

  2.Junior A Category

  Gold Prize: CNY 3,000

  Silver Prize: CNY 2,000

  Bronze Prize: CNY 1,000

  Finalist Prize: 3 winners, CNY 800 each

  Honorable Mention: 4 winners, CNY 500 each

  3.Junior B Category

  Gold Prize: CNY 3,000

  Silver Prize: CNY 2,000

  Bronze Prize: CNY 1,000

  Finalist Prize: 3 winners, CNY 800 each

  Honorable Mention: 4 winners, CNY 500 each

  4.Children Category

  Gold Prize: CNY 2,000

  Silver Prize: CNY 1,500

  Bronze Prize: CNY 800

  Finalist Prize: 3 winners, CNY 500 each

  Honorable Mention: 4 winners, CNY 300 each

  Note: The above amounts are pre-tax and subject to applicable income tax as required by law.

  VI. Registration Information

  No fees will be charged for participation in this competition. All expenses related to travel, accommodation, meals, and transportation for contestants and their companions shall be borne by the individuals themselves. Each contestant must submit the following documents via email to: gulangyupianoyy@163.com .

  1.Registration Form

  a) Please visit the Xiamen Gulangyu Government Affairs website: http://gly.xm.gov.cn or the official website of the Xiamen Gulangyu Cultural Tourism Development Center: http://www.glyylq.cn to download the registration form. An electronic version of the completed form, as well as a printed version signed by the contestant (scanned or photographed), must be submitted. Registration forms that are incomplete or unclear, or that lack the required supporting materials, will be deemed invalid. Submitted registration materials will not be returned; contestants should retain copies for their records. The competition organizing committee will keep all application materials confidential and reserves the right to request additional documents from contestants.

  b) Contestants must fill out the registration form truthfully according to the given instructions and are responsible for the accuracy of the information provided. Any issues arising from non-compliance with the registration instructions, errors or omissions in the form, or submission of false information that result in disqualification or inability to participate in the competition shall be the sole responsibility of the contestant.

  2.Application Materials

  a) One recent electronic half-length photo (in JPG format, no less than 400 pixels) and two performance photos (in JPG format, no less than 400 pixels). By submitting these photos, contestants consent to the use of their likeness by the organizing committee for promotional purposes related to this competition.

  b) A digital copy or scanned version of the contestant’s ID card or passport.

  c) A digital version of the contestant’s résumé.

  d) Performance videos recorded within the past year; each piece may be recorded separately, but no editing or camera movement is permitted.

  e) The organizing committee has full authority over the recording, filming, television broadcasting, online distribution, award ceremonies, concerts, and other related activities during the competition. All rights to the audiovisual materials will belong to the organizing committee, and no additional compensation will be provided to contestants.

  The deadline for applications is 12:00 a.m. on May 20, 2025.
